TVM, short for Television Malta, is Malta’s national public television channel, operated by Public Broadcasting Services. Its roots go back to the country’s public broadcasting system of the 1960s, and it continues to play a central role in local news, public affairs, drama, and community-focused programming.
The channel’s lineup includes news, current affairs, locally produced drama series, game shows, sports coverage, and family entertainment. It also carries selected English-language programs from the BBC and ITV. One of its most established broadcasts is the 8 PM L-Aħbarijiet TVM news bulletin, which remains a regular viewing choice for many Maltese households.
Programs such as Strada Stretta and L-Għarusa draw heavily from Maltese history, language, and daily life. That local focus gives TVM a distinct identity and helps set it apart from many smaller public broadcasters. Discussion and current affairs shows, including Xarabank, have also played a significant part in shaping public debate over the years.
Much of the channel’s audience consists of Maltese families, older viewers, and people who follow daily news coverage. Maltese communities living abroad also use TVMi and online streaming services to stay connected with events, culture, and programming from home.
TVM is available free-to-air across Malta through DVB-T and is also carried by pay-TV providers such as Melita TV. Online access is available through the TVM website and the TVMi platform, where live channels and catch-up content are presented in a straightforward, easy-to-navigate format.
The web player loads quickly and keeps navigation simple. Archived programs are organized by category, making them easy to browse. Broadcasts are delivered in a 16:9 format, with HD viewing available on supported platforms. Some films and sports events may be restricted outside certain regions because of licensing agreements, although news programming and most locally produced content remain widely accessible.
Rather than focusing on streaming-first entertainment, TVM remains centered on Maltese culture, public-interest journalism, and locally produced storytelling. Its programming continues to reflect everyday life in Malta and maintains a strong connection with the communities it serves.
