BBS불교방송 (BBS TV) started out as a radio station, not a tv channel. The broadcaster first went on air on May 1, 1990, running FM out of Seoul at 101.9 MHz, then slowly expanded coverage to other regions. Television only came later, in 2008, when BBS TV joined KT's IPTV lineup on channel 550, running 24 hours a day. So this is a Buddhist media outlet with over three decades behind it, not some channel that popped up overnight and might vanish next year.

Programming leans heavily Buddhist, but the lineup goes past chanting and dharma talks. Current shows include 원영스님의 불교대백과, 지식의 맛 인문학 레시피, and a news program called 리뷰 25시 that launched in 2024, built by repackaging existing radio and news content under a one source, multiple format approach. Beyond religion, the schedule also covers health, culture, education and social issues, so the audience is not limited to practicing Buddhists.

The core audience is still Korean Buddhists, especially older and middle aged listeners who grew up on radio. That said, content around meditation, mental wellness and traditional culture pulls in some younger viewers too, and the YouTube presence opens the door for international viewers curious about Korean Buddhism.

Access wise, there are several entry points, FM radio, TV through IPTV, cable or satellite, the official website, a dedicated app, and the BBSKOREA YouTube channel. The app bundles radio, TV and news into one place, so switching between platforms is not really necessary. Streaming speed is not something the source material spells out, that part is probably worth checking firsthand.

Most people do not stumble onto BBS on their own, they tend to hear about the channel through the Buddhist community, through cultural events the broadcaster helps organize like the Korean Buddhist Culture Expo in Daegu, or through the local network spread across Busan, Gwangju, Daegu and several other provinces. Once someone finds the channel, coming back is easy since there is a dedicated app, bookmarking the site or saving the app makes for a quick way back next time, and sharing the channel with someone who might get something out of that does not hurt either.
