JioPC: Transforming TVs into Computers with Cloud Technology

Category: TV Viewing and Shows

Jio Platforms, the tech initiative led by Mukesh Ambani, India’s wealthiest billionaire, is set on an ambitious mission to turn millions of televisions across the world’s most populous nation into personal computers.

According to a report by TechCrunch, Jio Platforms—headed by Mukesh Ambani, who also chairs Reliance Industries—has introduced a virtual desktop service tailored for users of its digital set-top boxes.

Dubbed JioPC, this innovative service delivers a cloud-powered PC experience directly through Jio’s digital set-top box. This device comes free with a home broadband plan or can be purchased independently for $64.

Currently, JioPC is in a free trial phase, accessible via a waitlist. Indian users can activate this virtual desktop on their TVs by simply connecting a keyboard and mouse once they receive an invitation and set up their accounts.

Own the future with the next-gen computer

Tarun Pathak, Research Director at Counterpoint Research, highlights that JioPC could be a game-changer for the Mumbai-based company, which already boasts a user base of 488 million. He notes that about 70% of Indian households own a TV, yet only 15% have a PC. This gap presents a significant opportunity, though Jio Platforms may need to educate and promote the service to its audience.

You need to convince people that you can still use a PC on your TV using the set-top box,” Pathak explained.

Government statistics reveal that India’s active user base for pay-TV digital set-top boxes stands at nearly 57 million. However, the traditional direct-to-home (DTH) TV market is shrinking as more people shift to internet-based services. Data indicates that by March, the active DTH subscriber base had dropped by 8% compared to the same period in 2024.

This move by Jio Platforms reflects a strategic effort to bridge the digital divide in India, leveraging widespread TV ownership to bring computing power to millions.
