Authy Desktop App to be Discontinued in August 2024

Authy, the popular two-factor authentication (2FA) app, will undergo a significant change as it bids farewell to its desktop version. Starting August 2024, Authy will only be accessible on mobile devices, specifically on Android and iOS platforms, as indicated by an updated support page reported by Bleeping Computer.

Similar to other 2FA apps such as Google Authenticator and Microsoft Authenticator, Authy generates unique codes every 30 seconds, enhancing the security of linked accounts. What set Authy apart was its availability on desktops, making it a convenient choice for users seeking seamless account access on their computers without reaching for their phones.

For users with Macs featuring M1 or M2 silicon, there is still a workaround. Authy suggests downloading the iOS version of the app onto these devices. However, for others, the recommendation is to transition to the mobile version, which can be effortlessly synchronized with the app on your computer. It's crucial to note that Authy lacks an export feature, necessitating the disabling of 2FA on connected accounts before switching to a different 2FA app.

Furthermore, Twilio, the parent company of Authy, has decided to relocate Authy's customer support hub to Twilio's website's help center after January 15th, 2024.

Twilio attributes the discontinuation of the desktop app to its strategic decision to "streamline focus and provide more value on existing product solutions with increasing demand." The move follows a 5 percent workforce reduction in December 2023, and Twilio recently announced the replacement of its CEO on Monday.

Authy is a popular two-factor authentication (2FA) app that helps you secure your online accounts

What is 2FA?

Two-factor authentication adds an extra layer of security to your online accounts beyond just a password. When you log in, you need to provide both your password and a unique code generated by your 2FA app like Authy. This makes it much harder for attackers to gain access, even if they somehow steal your password.

How does Authy work?

Authy generates temporary, six-digit codes that change every 30 seconds. When you log in to an online account that uses 2FA with Authy, you simply enter the current code displayed in the app. This adds an extra step to the login process, but it significantly strengthens your security.

What makes Authy special?

  • Cross-device accessibility: Authy works on both Android and iOS devices, unlike some 2FA apps that are mobile-only. This makes it convenient to access your codes from any device you're using.
  • Cloud backup: Authy can back up your 2FA accounts to the cloud, so you don't lose them if you lose your phone.
  • Multi-device synchronization: You can use Authy on multiple devices at the same time, and your codes will synchronize automatically.
  • Easy setup: Authy is very easy to set up and use, even for non-technical users.
